PLEASE STOP The Destruction of the 77th Green Space on PCC’s SE Campus!
A poorly planned housing development threatens to take down a dozen mature trees, established fruit and nut trees in a small “Food Forest”, and decimate a vital green space. This green space is one of the very few that exist around the neighborhood surrounding the major 82nd Avenue and Division Intersection, known as the Jade District.
This apartment building is supposed to be an honor for the area’s strong Asian Community but they are doing it by by taking away a rare green space in the largely Asian and immigrant community. How can that be a good thing?
The large trees that line the PCC southwestern corner of their enormous campus are some of the oldest in the neighborhood and deserve to stay. This green space offers homes to may birds and squirrels, including a northern flicker woodpecker family. Dozens of dog walkers pass through the stand of trees every day, and residents come here to sit in the shade on hot days. This green space should be celebrated for it’s open beauty and established mature shade trees! Instead, it’s very existence is being eradicated for proposed housing.
Construction company LMC’s own arborist said the reason people would want to live on this spot was “for the trees” -- The very trees they plan to cut down for this project and replace with new trees that he says “will be as big in a few decades”. WHY???
This is a terrible spot for the apartments, they would be a great improvement over the enormous and largely unused parking lot on the north side of the campus. This plan would include frontage on the quiet side street of 80th. This alternative location also allows for a large public art to honor and celebrate the Asian community with a true plaza on 82nd on the north end of the campus.
This greenway should remain to be enjoyed by the community fully for decades to come!
Stop the destruction of these trees and this space. It’s not too late!
The families that move to this housing complex should be able to enjoy this green space rather than squash it. It will take many decades to grow new trees to the size of the existing trees.
Please stop this! Please don’t kill the trees, our neighborhood needs them so badly!!!
It’s hard to understand has this site was chosen over a barren parking lot on the north side of the campus? This is a far superior site for a number of reasons:
Let’s move the housing to a better location in the never used parking area on 80th at the NW corner of the campus. This would allow for apartments facing the quiet side street of 80th Ave, Others could be set back on the property to allow for a large plaza on 82nd on the north end of the PCC Campus where public art and a public market space as well as parking could be utilized. The development could utilize the entire northeast corner of the campus and a plaza could be placed along 82nd to truly honor the Asian community here.
The plaza along 82nd could include public art to honor Chinese heritage -- Think Great Wall of China in front of the parking area, or the ancient pillars at the ruins of Liangzhu city to stand along the 82nd street side of the building, a market space with large dragons, there are so many ways!!!
.Legin Commons should truly honor the Asian Culture that stands strong in this community!
